What about NCAA regulations?

The NCAA has confirmed that it does not view crowdfunding any differently than any other form of fundraising for D1 student athletes. The rules for crowdfunding are the same as for a bake sale. In regard to eligibility and amateur status, this usually requires that funds raised do not exceed "actual and necessary expenses" and relate to competition or training for competition.

That being said, athletes are responsible for ensuring their own compliance with NCAA rules. If you have any questions, we suggest you visit the NCAA's Eligibility Center website at www.eligibilitycenter.org. We also encourage student-athletes to contact their institution's athletic department when embarking upon an online fundraising campaign - as some schools may have their own rules for student-athletes. For example, D2 and D3 colleges and universities may have varying interpretations on using crowdfunding as a student-athlete.
